An 18 year old who is known to have bronchial asthma is admitted with severe dyspnoea and wheezing.

On examination he is distressed , cannot complete sentences when speaking , pulse 120 beats per minute , BP 119/70 , respiratory rate 32 per minute , heart sounds normal , bilateral rhonchi throughout both lung fields .

The patient is treated with inhaled salbutamol and ipratropium and steroids.

Despite this he continues to be dyspnoeic and is becoming restless and agitated.

Your next step would be:

a)    Aminophylline bolus

b)    Aminophylline infusion

c)     Intravenous magnesium

d)    Intravenous diazepam
