The results are as follows:
Hb 12.5 g/dL
MCV 66 fl
MCH 24 pg
MCHC 26 g/dL
WBC 6.1 x109/L
Platelets 232 x109/L
In this patient which one of the following tests is most
likely to identify the cause of the condition?

The patient is probably asymptomatic as the tests were
done as part of a routine medical check up.
He has a marked microcytosis in comparison to the
haemoglobin level. This should alert you to the possibility of thalassaemia.
The diagnosis would be made by haemoglobin
electrophoresis, which would show an elevation of Hb A2 and Hb F
